Plato, reread rather than repaired: treat Forms as a comparison lens for axes of possibility—the ways a system can vary.
The discovery
What exists most is not stuff. It is room to vary.
Plato argued that intelligible structure is not reducible to any one transient instance. Emergentism proposes a modern comparison: model some such structure as the axes along which a system can differ. This preserves a direction of inquiry without claiming to settle Plato's metaphysics.
Take a musical note. It can vary in pitch, duration, loudness, and timbre. A coordinate model represents many particular notes without being another note itself. In this selected reading, a Form is compared with a degree of freedom. The comparison is useful if it reveals variation; it is not an identity between philosophy and mathematics.
Watch what the emergence hypothesis asks. When a lower-level description ceases to express a higher-level capability economically, does a new variable become explanatorily necessary—bond structure, self-maintenance, modeling, or explicit alternatives? Each candidate layer proposes new room to vary; whether it is ontically new, merely compressed, or reducible remains a discriminator.
The conjecture: more generative structure may deserve more explanatory weight.
A coordinate can describe many transient instances, but explanatory priority does not by itself prove ontic priority. The reality-gradient is therefore a wager: degrees of freedom may be more than convenient bookkeeping. The rival is equally clear—they may be abstractions imposed by models on material processes.

It changes the question you ask of anything — a job, a relationship, a piece of code, your own life. Ask instead: along what can this vary, and which of those axes is saturated? Stuck things are almost always things that have filled their current room. The move is never to push harder along a full axis. It is to find the axis that just opened.
