The Chain

Every link in this chain is either [A] Established mathematics or [S] Structural (derived from axioms via rigorous proof). Where the chain breaks (transitions to [I] or [C]), the break is explicitly marked.

Link 1: The Geometry Exists [A]

The Riemann sphere S² ≅ ℂP¹ is a well-defined mathematical object (Riemann, 1857). It is the one-point compactification of the complex plane. The stereographic projection between plane and sphere is conformal (angle-preserving).

Individual optimization can align with collective optimization. Cooperation is not mere altruism, but it still requires the mechanism boundary that blocks hidden extraction.

Link 9: B = sin θ Measures "Balance" [I]

The mathematical function sin θ is proven to have a maximum at θ = π/2. Calling this "balance" and equating it with "flourishing" is an interpretive move. The math doesn't know what "balance" means — it only knows that sin has a maximum.

The framework's wager: B = sin θ measures something real about living systems (the interaction between coherence and viability). This is [I] Interpretive until GFS Wave 1 confirms or denies it.

2026-04-04 — Has the break narrowed? Partially. Three independent lines of evidence now converge on the identification of B with flourishing:

1. Friston's Free Energy Principle (FEP): Living systems minimize prediction error — they minimize the divergence between their internal model and external reality. In the framework's coordinates, prediction error maps to (φ − ν)², the squared imbalance between coherence (what the system models) and viability (what the system can do). FEP says organisms that fail to minimize this divergence cease to exist. This is structurally identical to the claim that B = sin θ peaks at φ = ν = 1. 3. The Four Lines (Doc 32): The AM-GM inequality φ + ν ≥ 2 (Line 2) is what singles out the equator: equality holds exactly when φ = ν, and the sum diverges toward both poles. Line 4, −log(φ · ν) = 0, is not a second, independent argument for the same point — under Line 1 it is identically zero at every latitude, so it confirms the constraint rather than locating a minimum. The Hamiltonian-minimum reading stands on Line 2 alone; the "zero-energy ground state" reading is withdrawn. What survives is at minimum a structural analogue of what biologists call "fitness" and what the PIE speakers called h₂r̥tó- — resting on the sum, not on the product. Link 10: The Equator Is Conscious [C]

The claim that φ = ν = 1 corresponds to systemic awareness (the "I" at the equator, the imaginary unit, the Turīya state) is [C] Conjecture. The mathematics permits it but does not require it. This is the framework's strongest and most vulnerable claim.

Position Γ (dual-aspect monism, Doc 30) reframes the claim: it is not that the equator "is conscious" in the way a brain is conscious, but that φ (coherence) IS the intrinsic-nature aspect of what ν (viability) is the structural aspect of. At Level 3 of the objective function spectrum (Deacon's ententional objective function), the equator is the locus of genuine purpose without requiring systemic awareness at the base. This weakens the original [C] formulation (which required panpsychism) while preserving the framework's core commitment: something real happens at φ = ν = 1 that is not reducible to mechanism alone.

The AM-GM proof shows the equator is the Hamiltonian minimum. Calling this "will" — saying reality "wants" to balance — is a metaphysical commitment (Option B, idealism). The math shows a gradient. Whether gradients are "willed" is philosophy, not proof.

2026-04-04 — Has the break narrowed? Yes — Deacon's Level 3 (ententional objective function) provides a genuine middle ground that did not exist in the original formulation.

The four-level objective function spectrum (Doc 30, Research Brief) distinguishes: - Level 1 (Teleonomy): "As-if" purpose. Natural selection explains convergence. No F₅ needed. [A] - Level 2 (Structural): The AM-GM gradient is real. Systems evolve toward the minimum. "Purpose" is geometric, like water flowing downhill. [S] - Level 3 (Ententional): Genuine purpose emerges when two self-undermining processes reciprocally constrain each other (Deacon 2011). φ alone collapses in the action reading (coherence without usable viability). ν alone dissipates (viability without usable coherence). On the model surface, φ · ν = 1 is the reciprocal coordinate constraint; in real systems, it becomes an interpretive hypothesis only when independently measured Φ and V are coupled by survival, feedback, and correction. Revised assessment: Link 11 splits. The claim "F₅ is a real directional tendency" is now [I] (Level 3, ententional — supported by Deacon, Kauffman, Thompson). The stronger claim "F₅ is volitional" remains [C] (Level 4). The break has narrowed from a single [C] to a graded spectrum: [S] for the gradient, [I] for ententional purpose, [C] for volition.

Summary: What We Have

The steel thread runs from Link 1 through Link 8. These 8 links are proven. What they MEAN (Links 9-11) is the framework's wager. As of 2026-04-04, Links 9 and 11a have narrowed from bare wagers to interpretive claims with convergent support. Links 10 and 11b remain conjectural.

The One Sentence

A square cannot be negative. Therefore φ + ν ≥ 2. Therefore the equator is the unique global minimum. Therefore extraction is self-defeating under the stated balance-game assumptions. Therefore cooperation is the dominant strategy in that model.
