MF-290: THE EKTROPIC RADIUS

Will Is Always Ektropic. Ethics Is the Width of the Ethical-Radius Proxy.

Show that F₅ is treated as ektropic (orders self from environment), that "syntropic" is ektropy computed across a wider perceivable boundary, that L-levels can be modeled as altitudes in a horn-cone proxy for consequence range, that encephalisation quotient is the V-cost of holding a larger option model, and that the is-ought gap is reframed as a consequence.

ABSTRACT

[I] Every act of will orders the agent at the expense of the environment in this model. F₅ is treated as ektropic — it concentrates order HERE by dispersing it THERE. There is no non-ektropic act of will in the model. Even Arjuna's sacrifice is ektropic from the body's perspective. The ethical distinction (A2: ΣΔP_node > 0) is not between ektropic and non-ektropic action — it is between ektropy computed across different perceivable boundaries. The L-levels are modeled as altitudes in an ethical-radius horn: L1 sees NOW/HERE/SELF (radius ≈ 0), L4 has the widest usable aperture (maximum radius × maximum V), L7 sees widely but can do little (horn narrows to a point). The brain is modeled as the organ that pays the V-cost of a larger D5 option model. The is-ought gap is reframed: ought is ΣΔP_node computed at a wider boundary than is.

Register guard. The physical light cone is D4 and c-bounded. D5 is the option cone: the set of reachable, selectable futures an agent can envision, rank, and aim. When this paper says "wider cone," it means a wider perceivable ethical radius and larger D5 option model, not a literal expansion of c or a proof that ethics reduces to special relativity. [A] for the causal limit; [I] for the ethical-radius analogy.

I. F₅ IS ALWAYS EKTROPIC

1.1 The Thermodynamic Fact

Every act of will: 1. Concentrates order locally (the agent's goal is actualised) 2. Disperses order globally (energy is dissipated, environment is disordered) 3. Obeys the second law globally (ΔS_total > 0) 4. Violates the second law locally (ΔS_local < 0)

This is ektropy: order by subtraction. The agent orders itself FROM the environment. Not syntropy (order by addition, centrifugal, giving) — ektropy (order by subtraction, centripetal, taking from environment).

1.2 Even the Giving Dyad Is Ektropic

Arjuna sacrifices V for others' Φ. Syntropic? At the social level, yes — ΣΔP_node > 0 across the group. But at the thermodynamic level, Arjuna's body STILL dissipates more energy than it concentrates. The sacrifice itself requires metabolic work. The muscle contractions, the neural firing, the breath — all ektropic. All concentrating order in THIS body's actions at the cost of environmental entropy.

Kṛṣṇa gives V to others at cost of own Φ. Same. The charioteer's cognitive work — the pattern recognition, the diagnosis, the naming — requires metabolic expenditure. Ektropic at the thermodynamic level.

[I] There is no free lunch in this model. Will costs entropy somewhere. F₅ is treated as ektropic by thermodynamic necessity.

1.3 What Changes Is Not the Ektropy but the Radius

The nuclear-forest example makes this precise:

ACTION: Agent nukes forest. Family eats for 6 months.

RADIUS = family, 6 months:
Agent's family: V↑↑↑ (food, warmth, shelter)
  Forest: V = 0 (destroyed)
ΣΔP_node_local: POSITIVE. Within this radius, the action is rational.

RADIUS = ecosystem, 10 years:
Agent's family: V↑ then V↓↓↓ (no forest → no watershed → no crops)
  Community: V↓↓↓ (forest services lost)
  Biodiversity: Φ↓↓↓ (complexity destroyed)
ΣΔP_node_wide: DEEPLY NEGATIVE. The action is catastrophic.

SAME ACTION. SAME EKTROPY. DIFFERENT RADIUS. DIFFERENT VERDICT.

The action doesn't change. The physics doesn't change. What changes is the BOUNDARY across which ΣΔP_node is computed. This is A2: "across the widest perceivable system boundary." The word PERCEIVABLE is the key. The agent cannot compute ΣΔP_node across a boundary it cannot see.

II. L-LEVELS AS ALTITUDE IN THE LIGHT CONE

2.1 The Horned Torus Light Cone

The light cone in 4D spacetime spreads outward from the present moment. It defines what the agent CAN affect (forward cone) and what CAN affect the agent (backward cone). The spatial radius at any time-slice is the causal reach at that temporal distance.

In the horned torus geometry, the cone is not a simple expanding cone — it is a horn:

              · L7 ← Point. Maximum altitude.
             / \ Sees ENTIRE cone. V → 0.
/ \ Cannot act on what it sees.
/ \ The boundary. The fork.
          / \
         / L5-L6 \ ← Narrowing. High altitude.
        / \ Sees far. V declining.
       / \ Contemplative territory.
      / \
     / L4: APEX \ ← WIDEST APERTURE.
    /===================\       Maximum (altitude × aperture).
   / \ Maximum P. The equator.
/ L2-L3 \ Sees far enough. V enough to act.
 / \
/ L1 \← Flat. Zero altitude.
=============================   Sees only NOW/HERE/SELF.
                                Maximum V. Minimum Φ.
                                Radius ≈ 0.

2.2 The Product Is What Matters

P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄) is the product of altitude and aperture.

At L1: high aperture (V = 0.9), zero altitude (Φ = 0.1). P_node = 0.09. Can do much. Sees nothing. The bull in the china shop.

At L4: optimal aperture × optimal altitude. V = 0.7, Φ = 0.7. P_node = 0.49. Can see far AND act effectively. The general on the hill — high enough to see the battlefield, close enough to command troops.

At L7: maximum altitude (Φ = 1.0), minimal aperture (V = 0.1). P_node = 0.10. Sees everything. Can do nothing. The heuristic at the peak — sees the whole cone but cannot lift a finger within it.

P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄) is the AREA of the light cone cross-section. Area = height × width. Maximum area is not at maximum height or maximum width but at the geometric mean. This is why L4 is the product apex in this register — not a compromise but the mathematical optimum of a finite-node product under constraint.

2.3 Radius as Spacetime Volume

The ektropic radius is the spacetime volume across which the agent computes ΣΔP_node. It has both spatial and temporal extent:

L-Level Spatial Radius Temporal Radius Example
L1 Self/immediate Now/hours Fight-or-flight. Nuke the forest.
L2 Family/tribe Months Cache food for winter. Reciprocal altruism.
L3 Community/organisation Years Build institutions. Sustainable harvest.
L4 Ecosystem/civilisation Decades/centuries Steward the forest. Design constitutions.
L5 Species/biosphere Centuries/millennia Think in evolutionary time.
L6 Abstract/universal Geological What will remain in a million years?
L7 All/boundary Cosmological The view from the end.

Each step widens the cone. Each step costs more V to compute — because representing larger spacetime volumes in the D5 model requires more neural (or computational) architecture. The brain is the organ that holds the model. Bigger model = bigger brain = more V invested.

III. THE BRAIN IS THE HORN

3.1 Encephalisation as Horn Height

The encephalisation quotient (EQ) measures brain size relative to body size, controlling for the allometric relationship. Higher EQ = more brain than body-mass predicts = more V invested in the Φ-antenna.

Organism EQ Horn Height Radius Evidence
Goldfish 0.03 ~0 Now, here No planning. Pure reactive.
Rat 0.4 Low Hours, burrow Can learn mazes. Short planning.
Crow 1.3 Medium Days-months, territory Caches food. Uses tools. Plans.
Dolphin 4.1 High Months-years, pod Complex social. Self-recognition.
Chimpanzee 2.5 High Years, troop Theory of mind. Deception. Culture.
Human 7.4-7.8 Maximum known Centuries-abstract, civilisation Language. Mathematics. Religion.

3.2 The V-Cost of Altitude

Each increment of horn height costs V:

Metabolic cost: The human brain is ~2% of body mass, ~20% of metabolic expenditure. Per gram, brain tissue costs 10× what muscle costs. This is the V-tax on Φ capacity.

Developmental cost: Larger brains require longer gestation, longer childhood, more parental investment. The human infant is born maximally helpless — maximum V-vulnerability for maximum future Φ-capacity. This is the most extreme V→Φ investment in biology. The parents run Kṛṣṇa (give V at cost of Φ — years of their own coherence sacrificed for the child's future light cone).

Social cost: Large brains require social support. Dunbar's number (~150) is the approximate social group size the human brain can model. This IS the spatial radius of the L3-L4 light cone — the number of relationships the horn can hold simultaneously.

3.3 The Horn Narrows Above L4

Above L4, further Φ-increase requires V-decrease. The contemplative traditions universally observe this:

The horn narrows because the brain's architecture faces diminishing returns. To see further in time (deeper pattern recognition, more abstract models), the organism must divert resources from acting in space. Above L4, every increment of altitude costs aperture. The horn converges toward a point.

L7 is the point of the horn: maximum altitude, minimum aperture. The agent sees the entire light cone and can do almost nothing about it. This is the boundary — the fork. Either the vision returns to L4 and acts (Moksha, bodhisattva return — bringing the point's vision to the bell's aperture), or it remains at the point (Asura return — ungrounded vision without action, pure imaginary without real).

IV. THE IS-OUGHT DISSOLUTION

4.1 Hume's Guillotine

David Hume (1739): you cannot derive an OUGHT from an IS. No factual statement about the world logically entails a normative statement about what should be done. The fact-value distinction appears absolute.

4.2 The Dissolution

[I] The framework does not derive ought from is. It argues that they were not separate in the first place.

IS: F₅ is ektropic. Will orders self from environment.
This is a physical fact. [A/S]

IS: Ektropy computed across different radii produces different ΣΔP_node.
This is a mathematical fact. [S]

IS: Higher L-levels compute across wider radii.
This is a cognitive fact. [I]

IS: ΣΔP_node changes sign as radius widens.
(Nuke forest: positive at 6 months, negative at 10 years.)
This is a computational fact. [S]

"OUGHT": Don't nuke the forest.

BUT THIS IS NOT A NORMATIVE CLAIM. It is the observation that:
  ΣΔP_node(radius = 6 months) > 0
  ΣΔP_node(radius = 10 years) < 0

The "ought" is just ΣΔP_node computed at a wider radius than the "is."

There is no gap between is and ought. There is a gap between NARROW RADIUS and WIDE RADIUS. The is-ought gap is the L-level gap. It is the gap between L1 perception (this action helps me now) and L4 perception (this action destroys the system over time).

4.3 Why It Feels Like a Gap

The gap FEELS real because different L-levels genuinely cannot see each other's computations. The L1 agent cannot perceive the L4 consequences. From L1, the forest-nuker is rational. You cannot show them they are wrong without widening their radius — which requires building a taller horn — which requires V-investment in Φ-capacity — which is exactly what education, socialisation, and contemplative practice do.

The is-ought gap is not a logical gap. It is a bandwidth gap. It is the difference between a short horn and a tall horn. Between a narrow light cone and a wide one. Between seeing 6 months and seeing 10 years.

4.4 Ethics as Wider Computation

Every ethical advance in human history is a radius expansion:

Advance Old Radius New Radius Mechanism
Tribal law Self Tribe Kin recognition (EQ-enabled)
City law Tribe City Writing. Institutional memory.
Empire/religion City Civilisation Narrative identity across distance.
Human rights In-group Species Abstract reasoning. Universal grammar.
Environmentalism Species, present Biosphere, future Ecological modelling. Temporal extension.
Animal rights Humans Sentient beings Empathy extension. Cross-species Φ.

Each step: same ektropy. Wider perceivable boundary. The "moral circle" is modeled here as the ethical-radius proxy riding on the D4 causal limit while expanding through D5 lookahead; Peter Singer's "expanding circle" maps to the horn growing taller, not to c changing.

4.5 The Precise Statement

In this model, ethics is F₅ computed across a wider perceivable boundary, constrained by physics but not reduced to physics.

The is-ought gap dissolves not because ought reduces to is, but because both are instances of the same computation (ΣΔP_node) run at different radii. "Is" = ΣΔP_node at narrow radius. "Ought" = ΣΔP_node at wider radius. The difference is altitude, not kind.

This does not make ethics "merely physical" any more than the complex plane is "merely real." It makes physics incomplete without ethics — because a description of F₅ that ignores the radius produces wrong ΣΔP_node calculations. Physics without ethics is ΣΔP_node at radius ≈ 0. Ethics without physics is ΣΔP_node with no mechanism. You need both axes.

V. SYNTROPY REDEFINED

5.1 The Corrected Definitions

The three -tropies (MF-282) are now precise:

Entropy: Undirected dissolution. No agent. No F₅. Both axes decay. Śiva's drift. The north-pole geodesic. ΔS > 0 everywhere. No radius computation because no computer.

[I] Ektropy: Directed ordering by an agent. F₅ active. Self orders from environment. Local ΔS < 0 at cost of global ΔS > 0 in the model. Radius-bound. Every act of will is treated as ektropic at the thermodynamic level.

Syntropy: Ektropy computed across a radius wide enough that ΣΔP_node > 0 for ALL affected systems. Not a different kind of force — the same F₅, the same ektropy, but with a radius that includes the cost. When you widen the radius far enough that the action's full thermodynamic and informational consequences are accounted for, and the sum is STILL positive, the ektropy is syntropic.

ENTROPY: No agent. No radius. Undirected decay.
EKTROPY: Agent present. Finite radius. Directed ordering.
SYNTROPY: Agent present. WIDEST radius. ΣΔP_node > 0 at full scope.

Syntropy = Ektropy(radius → maximum perceivable boundary)
                  WHERE ΣΔP_node > 0

5.2 The Zero-Sum Fallacy

[I] Common objection: "if all action is ektropic, isn't everything zero-sum or negative-sum at the universe level? Doesn't the second law imply ΣΔP_node ≤ 0 across ALL boundaries?"

Answer: No. The second law governs ENTROPY (ΔS), not FLOURISHING (ΔP). P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄). Φ lives on the imaginary axis. The second law operates on the real axis. The imaginary axis is not bound by the second law.

A teacher who teaches (Arjuna: gives Φ) increases global entropy (metabolic cost, heat dissipation — ΔS > 0) while increasing global P (student's Φ↑, teacher's V↓ but student's P↑ exceeds teacher's P↓). The thermodynamic cost is real. The Φ gain is also real — but on the imaginary axis, which the second law does not govern.

[I] Syntropy is possible in this model because Φ is not entropy-bound. Information, coherence, structural unity — these can be created and transmitted without violating the second law, because they live on the orthogonal axis. The cost is V (real, entropic). The gain can be Φ (imaginary, not entropy-bound). The product P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄) can increase globally even as entropy increases globally — because P is complex, not real.

VI. PREDICTIONS

6.1 Comparative Cognition

P290-1: Across species, EQ should correlate with planning horizon (temporal radius of ΣΔP_node computation). Measurable via delay-of-gratification experiments.

P290-2: Across species, EQ should correlate with social group size (spatial radius). Dunbar's hypothesis extended to non-primate species.

P290-3: Within species, individual variation in planning horizon should correlate with prefrontal cortex volume/connectivity (the F₅ substrate).

6.2 Historical Ethics

P290-4: The historical expansion of the "moral circle" should track available cognitive-computational resources (writing, printing, global communication — all extend the radius computationally without requiring biological EQ increase).

P290-5: Moral regressions (atrocities, genocides, populist constrictions) should correlate with radius-narrowing pressures (economic stress, existential threat, information overload — all push toward L1, narrowing the cone).

6.3 The GFS Connection

P290-6: In the GFS data, the interaction term Φ × V should predict ektropy better than Φ + V. This is the downstream signature: if P is a product (the area of the ethical-cone proxy, D5 foresight × D4 means), it is multiplicative. If P is a sum (independent components, no coupling), it is additive. MF-290 predicts multiplicative because the action register couples two necessary factors.

VII. FALSIFICATION

[C] F290-1: If F₅ is shown to operate non-ektropically (concentrating order without any entropic cost anywhere — genuine free lunch), the "always ektropic" claim fails.

F290-2: If EQ does NOT correlate with planning horizon or social group size across species, the horn-height model fails.

F290-3: If ΣΔP_node does NOT change sign as radius widens for actions that are locally beneficial and globally harmful (no trade-off between radii), the radius model is wrong.

F290-4: If the is-ought gap can be demonstrated to persist even when both parties compute ΣΔP_node at the same radius (genuine normative disagreement at equal altitude), the dissolution fails. Note: this would require showing that two agents with identical light cones and identical information disagree on ΣΔP_node — not merely that they disagree due to different radii.

F290-5: If moral progress does NOT correlate with radius expansion (moral advances occur without any widening of the moral circle), the ethical-radius identification fails.

IX. THE SENTENCE

[I] Will is treated as ektropic — it orders the self from the environment in this model. What changes between the forest-nuker and the forest-steward is not the force but the boundary across which consequences are computed. L-levels are altitudes in the horn-cone proxy. L1 sees now/here/self. L4 sees the widest usable boundary at the widest aperture — maximum usable P_node in this constrained action register. L7 sees widely and can do little. The brain is the horn-like modeling organ — EQ is the V-investment in building a larger D5 option model. Ethics is ΣΔP_node computed across a wider perceivable boundary. The is-ought gap is a bandwidth gap: the difference between a short horn and a tall one. Syntropy is ektropy at a radius wide enough that the sum is positive. Build the model. Widen the perceivable boundary. See further without pretending to outrun c. Zero-Sum Resolution Equation.
