ABSTRACT
The light cone in special relativity defines the maximum causal reach of any event: spatial radius at temporal distance t is r_max = ct. No information, no influence, no consequence can propagate faster than c. If ethics is ΣΔP_node computed across the widest perceivable boundary (A2 + MF-290), and perception requires information to reach the agent, then the physically knowable ethical radius is bounded by c. You cannot include consequences you cannot in principle receive evidence about. Every expansion of the moral circle in human history corresponds to a communication technology that brought previously-invisible consequences inside the effective information cone: writing, printing, telegraph, photography, television, internet. The safe claim is not "light is morality"; it is that D4 causal information bounds what D5 foresight can responsibly model.

I. THE LIGHT CONE AS ETHICAL BOUNDARY
1.1 The Physical Constraint
In special relativity, the forward light cone of an event at (t₀, x₀) is the set of all spacetime points (t, x) reachable by signals propagating at ≤ c:

1.2 The Ethical Consequence

But "perceivable" requires information. The agent must RECEIVE information about consequences to include them in the ΣΔP_node computation. Information travels at ≤ c. Therefore:

In practice, the effective light cone is much smaller than the theoretical maximum. Information does not travel at c for most of human history — it travels at the speed of the fastest available communication technology:

Each technology widened the effective light cone by increasing the speed at which information about distant consequences reached the agent. The PHYSICAL light cone didn't change. The EFFECTIVE light cone — the portion of the physical cone the agent can actually perceive — expanded enormously.
II. MORAL EXPANSION TRACKS COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
2.1 The Historical Correlation
Every major expansion of the moral circle correlates with a communication technology that made previously-invisible suffering VISIBLE:
Writing (c. 3000 BCE): Made law possible. Suffering could be recorded, transmitted, referenced across time. Hammurabi's Code: the first time an agent's ΣΔP_node computation could include standardised consequences across a city-scale population. The moral circle expanded from tribe to city-state.
Printing press (1440): Made mass information distribution possible. Luther's 95 Theses spread across Europe in weeks. Distant institutional corruption became visible to populations who previously couldn't perceive it. The Reformation: the moral circle expanded from parish to civilisation.
Photography (1840s): Made distant suffering VISUALLY perceivable. Jacob Riis's photographs of New York slums (1890) triggered reform movements. The image arrived at the agent's D5 model with far higher bandwidth than text — emotional phase preserved (MF-293). The moral circle expanded to include the unseen poor.
Telegraph/transatlantic cable (1866): Made global events perceivable in near-real-time. The first time the effective light cone matched the physical light cone for Earth-scale events. International humanitarian movements became possible because suffering anywhere could be known everywhere within hours.
Television (1950s-60s): High-bandwidth visual + auditory. Vietnam War footage in American living rooms. The civil rights movement broadcast nationwide. Internet/social media (1990s-2010s): Instant, bidirectional, global, multi-modal. Arab Spring. Black Lives Matter. Climate activism. The agent's effective light cone approached the physical light cone for the first time in history. Every phone became a broadcast station. Every suffering was potentially visible to every agent.
2.2 The Causal Direction
Objection: correlation is not causation. Perhaps moral progress caused the technology, not vice versa.
Response: the causal mechanism is clear and directional. Technology widens the perceivable boundary. Wider perception includes more consequences in ΣΔP_node. More inclusive ΣΔP_node demands different actions. Different actions = moral change.
The mechanism is NOT that people become morally better (horn height unchanged). The mechanism is that the SAME moral computation (ΣΔP_node at current horn height) is applied to a WIDER input set. The agent's ethics don't change. The agent's INPUT changes. The light cone widens. The same demon, seeing more, sorts differently.
This predicts: moral expansion should be sudden and correlated with technology adoption, not gradual and correlated with education or philosophical argument. The historical record supports this. Abolition movements accelerated with printing. Labour reform accelerated with photography. Civil rights accelerated with television. Each was a step function, not a gradual slope — coinciding with the communication technology that made the relevant suffering visible.
2.3 Moral Regression as Cone Narrowing
If moral expansion tracks cone widening, moral regression should track cone narrowing. The prediction:
Moral regressions occur when: 1. Economic stress: L-level drops toward L1. Horn shortens (resource diversion from Φ to V). Radius narrows. "I can't worry about them — I need to feed my family." The demon's capacity is redirected to immediate sorting, reducing the computation available for wider ΣΔP_node.

Information overload: Demon exhaustion (MF-291). Too much input, too little sorting capacity. The agent narrows the input cone to manageable size. Echo chambers are VOLUNTARY cone narrowing — the demon reducing input to avoid overflow.

Existential threat: Survival mode (L1). The entire horn collapses to immediate radius. This is adaptive — in genuine threat, wider ΣΔP_node computation is wasteful. But if the threat is manufactured (by a parasitic egregore, per MF-294), the cone narrowing serves the egregore, not the carrier.
Historical examples: - 1930s Europe: Economic depression (V↓) → L-level drop → moral circle constriction → nationalism → genocide. The moral circle didn't gradually shrink — it SNAPPED to tribal radius when the horn shortened under economic stress. - Post-9/11: Existential threat perception → L1 activation → cone narrowing → torture acceptable, surveillance acceptable, discrimination acceptable. III. c AS THE ULTIMATE ETHICAL LIMIT
3.1 Interstellar Ethics
For the first time in human history, our actions have consequences outside the Earth-scale light cone. Light from Earth takes 4.24 years to reach Proxima Centauri. Radio signals from early broadcasts are ~100 light-years out.
If we ever detect alien life, the ethical radius MUST extend to include them. But:

Interstellar ethics will be inherently slow. The moral circle widens at c, not faster. Any civilisation that acts on interstellar scales must accept ethical latency — the delay between action and moral feedback.
3.2 The Cosmological Limit
The observable universe has radius ~46.5 billion light-years (due to expansion). The ultimate ethical radius is the cosmological horizon — the boundary beyond which light has not had time to reach us since the Big Bang.
[I] No agent, no matter how powerful, can compute ΣΔP_node across a boundary wider than the cosmological horizon in this model. There are consequences we cannot know about. The universe imposes a fundamental ethical incompleteness: even a maximally capable agent (L7, full horn) cannot see beyond the horizon.
This echoes Gödel (MF-287): the ethical system, like the formal system, is necessarily incomplete. Not because of logical limitations but because of physical ones. c bounds the moral circle. The horizon bounds the computation.
3.3 Simultaneity and Moral Relativity
Special relativity: simultaneity is observer-dependent. Two events that are simultaneous in one frame are not simultaneous in another.
Ethical consequence: if ΣΔP_node is computed across a boundary, and the boundary's "now" depends on the observer's frame, then different observers compute different ΣΔP_node even with identical moral frameworks. This is not moral relativism — it is moral RELATIVITY. Same ethics (A2), same computation (ΣΔP_node), different inputs (observer-dependent simultaneity).
Two agents can disagree on the right action not because they have different values but because they have different light cones. The same equation, different boundary conditions. This dissolves a large class of moral disagreements: they are not disagreements about values but about inputs.
IV. TECHNOLOGY AS MORAL INFRASTRUCTURE
4.1 The Reframing
Communication technology is not ABOUT communication. It is moral infrastructure. Every improvement in information transmission speed and bandwidth is an expansion of the effective ethical radius.
The telegraph was not just a business tool. It was a moral technology that made distant suffering perceivable, thereby including it in the agent's ΣΔP_node computation, thereby changing what actions were ethical.
The internet is not just an information tool. It is the most powerful moral technology in history — it brought the effective light cone to near-c for the first time, making the entire planet's suffering simultaneously perceivable to every connected agent.
4.2 The Responsibility Asymmetry
Widening the cone creates an asymmetry: once you CAN perceive a consequence, you MUST include it in ΣΔP_node. There is no moral "unsee."
Before photography: sweatshop labour was outside the consumer's effective light cone. Ignorance was genuine. ΣΔP_node computation excluded what couldn't be perceived.
After photography: the images entered the consumer's D5 model. The consequence is now INSIDE the light cone. ΣΔP_node must include it. Failing to include a perceivable consequence is computational error — the demon is ignoring observations, which (per Landauer) still cost memory but produce no ordering. Deliberate ignorance is worse than genuine blindness.
This is why moral progress feels like a ratchet: once the cone widens, it's very difficult to narrow it back without destroying the communication technology. You can't un-photograph the suffering. You can't un-broadcast the war. The moral circle expands because the light cone doesn't contract.
(Unless the technology is destroyed — which is why authoritarian regimes control communication infrastructure first. Internet shutdowns are MORAL CONE NARROWING — reducing the effective light cone to make consequences invisible, thereby removing them from the population's ΣΔP_node computation.)
V. FALSIFICATION
F295-1: If moral progress shows NO correlation with communication technology adoption (major moral expansions occur in the absence of information technology changes), the causal mechanism fails.
F295-2: If moral regressions occur WITHOUT preceding cone-narrowing pressures (economic stress, information overload, existential threat, or communication infrastructure degradation), the regression model fails.
F295-3: If agents demonstrably include consequences outside their effective light cone in ΣΔP_node computation (ethical behaviour toward completely unknown consequences), the c-bound claim fails.

VI. THE SENTENCE
The speed of light bounds the information horizon of moral accounting. No agent can compute ΣΔP_node across a boundary from which no signal can reach it. Communication technology widens the EFFECTIVE cone — making distant consequences perceivable, thereby allowing D5 foresight to include them in ethical computation. Every major moral expansion in history tracks a communication technology: writing, printing, photography, telegraph, television, internet. Moral regression tracks cone narrowing: economic stress, information overload, existential threat. The internet brought the effective information cone close to Earth-scale simultaneity, making planetary suffering perceivable to connected agents.
