Evidence Tier: [I] Interpretive. The dissolution maps identity persistence onto the S² coherence geometry. This is a coherent reading within the framework, not an independently established structural result. See The Honest Position.
1. THE PROBLEM
The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment attributed to Plutarch. Theseus's ship is preserved in a harbor. Over time, its wooden planks rot and are replaced, one by one, until eventually every original plank has been removed. Is the resulting ship the same ship?
Hobbes extended the paradox: what if the removed planks are collected and reassembled into the original configuration? Now there are two ships — the continuously maintained vessel and the reconstructed original. Which is the Ship of Theseus?
The deeper question: What constitutes identity? If identity tracks material composition, the ship is no longer itself once enough parts change. If identity tracks some other property, what is it, and how is it preserved across material flux?
2. THE TOPOLOGY ERROR
The paradox assumes identity is a function of material constitution — that the ship is "the same ship" if and only if its physical parts are the same. The older shorthand called this V; the register-honest reading is narrower: material substrate is only one D4 means-to-act condition, not the whole finite action factor. This Euclidean reduction treats identity as a static spatial property: same parts in same arrangement equals same identity.
Under this framing, the paradox is unresolvable. Every plank replaced reduces material continuity. At some threshold, identity must be lost — but no non-arbitrary threshold exists. 51% same parts? 90%? All of them? The boundary is invisible because the axis is wrong.
3. THE DISSOLUTION
The framework separates two readings, not two substances: D4 substrate / means conditions and D5 operational coherence.
- Substrate tracks material composition — the parts, their arrangement, their physical support.
- Coherence tracks operational continuity — the systemic integration that makes the parts function as a unified vessel. In the action register, this becomes
Φonly when a finite agent can use that coherence as worldline-foresight.
On S², the ship's identity is its equatorial position (φ=1, ν=1) — the balance point where coherence and viability are in equilibrium. This is the state in which the ship functions as a ship: carrying cargo, maintaining structural integrity, executing the operations that define it.
As planks are replaced incrementally, substrate changes while operational coherence is maintained. The ship's continuity (structural function, crew continuity, naming, institutional role) persists across material substitution. The vessel remains near the identity-equator.
The reconstructed original — the pile of old planks reassembled — has restored substrate but lacks operational continuity. No functional coherence, no systemic integration, no carried history of use. It is a collection of historically significant timber. Its φ is low in the identity reading; it is not at the equator.
Identity = position on S², not material constitution.
This is why a river can be the same river despite completely different water, a band can be the same band despite member changes, and a body can be the same person despite extensive cellular turnover (most somatic cells replaced over years, though neurons persist for decades). Identity tracks operational continuity, not bare substrate.
4. THE FRAMEWORK CONNECTION
- P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄): In the action register, the framework separates D5 foresight/coherence from D4 means-to-act. The Ship paradox uses the same distinction analogically: substrate conditions can change while operational coherence persists. It is not claiming that material composition is literally the whole
Vfactor in every register. - Equatorial balance: The equator (φ=1, ν=1) is the framework's balance point. Identity persists at the equator; it degrades toward either pole. Pure material identity (north pole, φ→∞) would mean identity is only the arrangement of atoms — fragile, destroyed by any replacement. Pure functional abstraction (south pole, ν→∞) would mean identity is completely independent of material — nothing anchors it.
- μ-limit continuity: The μ-limit mediates between D4 actuality and D5 possibility. Identity continuity is a μ-limit phenomenon — the boundary condition that selects which possibility becomes actual maintains its shape across time, even as the contents it selects among change.
- η = 0: A system maintains identity when it sustains coherence without extracting it from its environment. The ship's identity persists because the operational structure is internally sustained, not parasitically dependent on any single material component.
- PD_05 connection: The One (the ship's identity) and the Many (its changing parts) are multiplicative complements. The identity is not destroyed by plurality of parts; it is constituted through their coherent integration.
5. WHAT WOULD FALSIFY THIS
- If coherence (Φ) were shown to be reducible to material composition (V): If operational continuity were provably nothing more than a complex arrangement of physical parts — no irreducible systemic property beyond the sum of components — then identity IS material constitution and the dissolution collapses.
- If systems with maintained Φ but total V replacement showed no measurable identity persistence: Empirically, if organisms, institutions, or artifacts undergoing complete material turnover showed no detectable trace of prior identity — no functional, behavioral, or structural continuity — the Φ-tracking claim fails.
- If the equator had no distinctive identity-persistence properties: If systems at φ=1, ν=1 showed no greater identity stability than systems at either pole, the S² mapping of identity to equatorial position is unjustified.
- If non-incremental replacement preserved identity equally: If replacing all planks simultaneously (total V change with no Φ disruption) preserved identity just as well as incremental replacement, the Φ-continuity claim weakens — it would suggest identity is merely a point-in-time snapshot, not an ongoing coherence.
