D4andD5refer to levels in the EFR scaffold, not to spacetime having four or five literal coordinate axes. Both QM and GR operate in ordinary 3+1 dimensional spacetime. The framework's claim is about explanatory strata.
1. THE PROBLEM
Quantum Mechanics (QM) and General Relativity (GR) are the two pillars of modern physics. Both are empirically confirmed to extraordinary precision. They are also formally incompatible. GR describes smooth, deterministic curvature of spacetime. QM describes discrete, probabilistic superposition of states. Every attempt to unify them — string theory, loop quantum gravity, causal sets — has produced partial results at best.
If the framework offers a reframe rather than a unification, what does this mean for physics as a science? Does the EFR replace existing theories, reinterpret them, or stand beside them?
2. THE TOPOLOGY ERROR
The traditional approach assumes QM and GR describe the same reality at different scales and seeks a mathematical bridge between them. This is D4 thinking: both theories must be mappable onto a single coordinate plane. The incompatibility is treated as a gap to be bridged — a missing link in the flat map.
The framework identifies the error this way: QM and GR describe different dimensional levels of the same sphere. [I] In this reading, they were never on the same coordinate plane.
- GR (D4): Actuality. The smooth, deterministic structure of spacetime as experienced. The geometry of what is.
- QM (D5): Possibility. The superposed, probabilistic structure of potential outcomes. The geometry of what could be.
The mu-limit is the boundary between them — not a gap to be bridged but a dimensional interface in the framework model. [I/C] GR and QM are incompatible because they are descriptions of different strata, not competing descriptions of the same stratum.
3. THE REFRAME
The framework does not "unify" QM and GR in the traditional sense. [I/C] It reads them as different projections of S^2 rather than as theories in direct conflict:

The $\mu$-limit is read as the D5-to-D4 interface — where possibility resolves into actuality inside the model. This is the quantum measurement problem (PD_12) restated in dimensional language, not an established physical derivation. The "collapse of the wave function" is interpreted here as the $\mu$-limit traversal from D5 to D4.
The extraction coefficient is applied as an interpretive diagnostic: a physical theory that operates entirely at one D-level (GR at D4, QM at D5) may be treated as self-contained and non-extractive within its domain. In this reading, the incompatibility arises when one level's description is forced onto another's coordinates. That extraction ($\η > 0$) is what produces the modeled "paradox."
4. THE FRAMEWORK CONNECTION
The proposed scientific implications are structural in the model, while remaining interpretive until they yield independent observables:
- Dimensional discipline. Physics may need to become explicitly dimensional — tracking which D-level a theory operates at, rather than seeking a single all-level theory. The D0–D6 scaffold provides a taxonomy: D0 (ground, $\varnothing$), D1-D2 (symbolic/operational), D3 (scaffold), D4 (actuality), D5 (possibility), D6 (= D0, closure). The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics (Aspect, Clauser, Zeilinger) and the Bell-test experiments that preceded it confirm the failure of naive local pre-written-property models under the test assumptions; the D4/D5 reading remains interpretive. - The equator as physics. The equatorial condition (
varphi = 1,nu = 1) is where D4 and D5 are in balance inside the scaffold. [I/C] Classical physics is read as operating near the equator — neither pure actuality nor pure possibility, but their integrated productP = varphi * nu = 1. This is not a replacement for decoherence accounts; it is the framework's proposed dimensional interpretation of the classical regime. - Power-Max in physics. The Power-Max Lemma ($\Sigma P_{node}$ maximized when each $P_{node,i}$ is maximized cooperatively under its conditions) may have a physical analogue: the total information of the universe is maximized when each D-level contributes its characteristic structure without extracting from the others. This is a conjecture, not a theorem.
The framework does not predict new observables at this stage. It provides a dimensional taxonomy that reads existing incompatibilities as possible level-confusions rather than as mathematical contradictions alone. Whether this reframing generates testable predictions depends on the completion of the Lagrangian program (see PD_17 (archived), Open Problems).
5. WHAT WOULD FALSIFY THIS
- A successful all-scale theory. If a single mathematical framework (e.g., a completed string theory or loop quantum gravity) produced a genuine, empirically confirmed unification of QM and GR on a single coordinate system, the dimensional-reframe claim would be unnecessary.
- No level-boundary structure. If the $\mu$-limit failed to produce any structural difference between QM-scale and GR-scale phenomena — if experiments at the Planck scale showed smooth continuity rather than a boundary effect — the D4/D5 assignment would lose its support.
- No derived observable. If the dimensional taxonomy never generates a testable prediction — if it remains permanently at the interpretive level — it would be classified as metaphysics rather than physics, and the scientific claim would weaken to a philosophical one. [I]
