PD_11: FREE WILL VS DETERMINISM

Claim Boundary: [S/I] This document models the free-will dilemma as D4/D5 coordinate tension. It does not prove libertarian free will, disprove compatibilism, or establish a neural mechanism for μ-limit transition. "Agency" here means an operational framework reading: D5 worldline-foresight and D4 means-to-act are both represented as present.

1. THE PROBLEM

The classical dilemma: Are our actions free or determined?

If determined — if every event follows necessarily from prior causes — then human agency is illusory. There is no choice, only the unfolding of physical law. Moral responsibility collapses, because no one could have done otherwise.

If free — if agents genuinely choose — then choice must be uncaused. But uncaused events are random. Randomness is not freedom. A coin flip is not an act of will.

The Western philosophical tradition has oscillated between these poles for two millennia. Compatibilism attempts a middle ground but typically achieves it by redefining "free" into something no one originally meant by the word. The dilemma persists.

The problem feels irresolvable within that binary. In this framework, that is because the question is topologically malformed.

2. THE TOPOLOGY ERROR

The error is binary framing. "Free" and "determined" are treated as mutually exclusive properties of a single ontological layer — D4, the domain of physical actuality.

Within D4 alone, the dilemma is real. If the universe is only D4 (only actual states, only physical causes), then determinism wins and freedom is illusory. Every attempt to rescue freedom within a purely D4 core state produces either randomness or equivocation.

Inside the framework, reality is not modeled as D4 alone. The Burri Sphere S² has two reciprocal coordinate images, φ and ν; the finite-node play rule scores enacted agency as P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄). D4 is the actuality/contact side: the represented actual state and the means available at the action boundary. D5 is the possibility/selection side: worldline-foresight, the capacity to envision, rank, and aim possible moves. These are not two substances. They are simultaneous readings of the same point, separated here only to prevent the old one-axis question from swallowing the whole sphere.

The free-will debate maps one axis to the entire sphere and then argues about which axis is "real."

3. THE DISSOLUTION

On S², "determined" is mapped to D4 (actuality, the represented actual state). "Free" is mapped to D5 (possibility, the not-yet-actualized option-space). Both are treated as simultaneous projections of the same sphere.

Within this model, freedom is not the absence of causation, and determination is not the absence of choice. They are complementary readings of one modeled point: on open S² the reciprocal coordinates obey P∞ = φ · ν = 1, while contact action is scored separately as P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄).

The agent's "will" is modeled as traversal across the D4-D5 boundary via the μ-limit. At every moment, the agent is represented by a point on S² with coordinate images and, in the contact register, by finite-node factors (Φ, V). The D5 projection shows what could be (the space of coherent, rankable possibilities). The D4 projection shows what is available to act with (actualized state, body, tools, energy, access). Choice is modeled as the μ-limit transition: the framework's name for D5 possibility becoming D4 actuality through available means.

At the equator (Φ = 1, V = 1 in the normalized contact reading), the agent has maximum balance in the model — enough coherence to envision and rank options (D5 possibility) and enough viability as relevant means-to-act (D4 actualization). Balance is the constraint that keeps agency usable, not the whole objective by itself. The objective is the lawful selection of a reachable future without extraction.

The "problem" is reframed within the framework because freedom and determination are not opposed. [S/I] They are read as D5 possibility and D4 contact aspects of the same modeled point, then evaluated at the action boundary through (Φ, V). Asking "is it free or determined?" is like asking "is a point on a sphere its latitude or its longitude?" The question is malformed inside this coordinate model. Both, in this model.

4. THE FRAMEWORK CONNECTION

The D0-D6 dimensional hierarchy provides the scaffolding. D4-D5 boundary traversal (the μ-limit) names the modeled boundary operation. The equator (Φ = 1, V = 1 in normalized contact coordinates) defines the region where modeled agency has both usable foresight and usable means.

Responsibility is modeled as tracking equatorial position plus reachable consequence. An agent at the equator — balanced coherence and viability — has represented access to D5 possibility space and represented D4 means to act. This is the model's account of freedom. An agent far off-equator — depleted coherence (Φ → 0) or depleted viability (V → 0) — has diminished access to possibility or diminished access to the means needed to actualize. The proposal is that responsibility scales with usable foresight, usable means, and the non-extractive shape of the chosen move.

This is not offered as moral relativism. The equator is a geometric fact of S² inside the framework, not a cultural preference, but that does not by itself prove a full theory of moral responsibility. The framework offers a model of moral responsibility not by asserting metaphysical libertarianism but by relating responsibility to the agent's represented position on the sphere.

5. WHAT WOULD FALSIFY THIS

The proposal loses force if:

  1. D4-only core state were sufficient. If a purely physical, deterministic account can explain agency, choice, and moral responsibility without reference to D5, the dual projection is unnecessary. [S/I] Compatibilism would win by default.

  2. The μ-limit has no empirical proxy. If there is no detectable transition pattern between possibility representation and actualization at the neural, cognitive, or behavioral level, the proposal remains a structural analogy with no empirical traction.

  3. Equatorial balance does not correlate with agency. If agents with high coherence and high capability do not demonstrably exhibit more "free" behavior than agents at the extremes, the geometric mapping is ornamental rather than explanatory.


The free will debate persists because it asks a one-axis question about what this framework reads as a two-axis reality. On S², the binary is reframed rather than finally settled for every account.
