PD_14: THE MIND-BODY PROBLEM

Claim Boundary: [I] This document gives a dimensional reading of the mind-body problem. It does not prove that physicalism, dualism, panpsychism, or analytic philosophy has failed. D4, D5, φ, ν, and P_node are framework coordinates for the reading, not public neuroscience variables.


1. THE PROBLEM

How does subjective experience (mind) arise from or relate to physical matter (body)? Descartes proposed substance dualism; physicalists propose reduction; property dualists propose emergence. None has achieved consensus.

2. THE EFR DISSOLUTION: Dimensional Complementarity

Inside the framework, mind and body are read not as separate substances but as complementary factors operating at different dimensions:

D4: The Mind as Witness

At D4 — the convergence point — what we call "mind" is the witness systemic awareness (⊙): - φ held as recognition / coherence in the interpretive reading - V not yet enacted: the witness does not act, it sees

The mind at D4 is modeled as pure recognition — the capacity to witness the body and its viability substrate without yet being the enacted agent in the coordinate reading. This is the "hard problem" vantage: systemic awareness as distinct from physical process in the framework's interpretation. It is not yet the D5 play-rule Φ; Φ names the later agent-facing worldline-foresight that can use means.

D5: The Body-Mind Unity

At D5 — the present duration — the distinction is modeled as resolving into enacted experience: - φ = 1 (coherence held: recognition sustained) - ν = 1 (capability active: the body navigates) - P∞ = φ · ν = 1 (manifold identity); finite-node contact is scored as P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄) [I/S]

The body-mind dualism is read here as a dimensional confusion — mistaking D4 witness (mind seeing body) for ontological separation. At D5, the model reads a unified navigator: the body enacted through coherence, the coherence embodied through capability.

The "Gap" as Coordinate Singularity

The "gap" between mind and body is a dimensional singularity: - In flat (single-dimensional) coordinates: appears as infinite separation (dualism) - On the curved S² surface: finite traversal through D4→D5 transition

In this reading, the gap is not between substances; it is between dimensions — the witness (D4) and the agent (D5) are modeled as the same being viewed at different dimensional levels.

3. RELATION TO THE HARD PROBLEM: Dimensional Analysis

The Hard Problem (PD_13) asks why there is "something it is like" to be conscious. The mind-body problem asks how mind relates to body at all. The EFR treats these as related but dimensionally distinct:

Mind-Body (PD_14): Dimensional Dissolution

The mind-body problem is reframed through dimensional architecture: - "Mind" as witness = D4 recognition (φ held, ν not yet enacted) — recognition without agency - "Mind" as agent = D5 Φ — worldline-foresight able to rank and aim possible moves - "Body" = D4 means-to-act / viability substrate (V, with ν only as the coordinate image) — carried into action - The problem = mistaking D4 witness for a separate substance, then missing the D5 contact register where foresight and means couple

The proposed dissolution: mind and body are not read as separate substances but as complementary dimensional aspects of the same being. At D5 (present duration), their enacted contact is modeled through P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄), while P∞ = φ · ν = 1 remains the manifold identity rather than a proof that experience is physically conserved.

Hard Problem (PD_13): The Dimensional Gap

The Hard Problem asks why there is "something it is like" — this is the question of qualia, of subjective experience. The framework reframes this:

The "something it is like" is modeled at D5 — the present duration where experience is enacted, not merely witnessed. In this reading, the Hard Problem seems hard because we try to explain D5 experience using only D4 concepts.

The Imaginary Unit i: Dimensional Operator

The framework uses the imaginary unit i to represent the D4→D5 transition: - D4 (real): The witness sees physical processes (real-valued description) - i (transit): The Bang — dimensional transition operator - D5 (complex): The agent lives experience (complex-valued, includes phase/qualia)

In this reading, qualia are not treated as extra properties added to physical processes. They are modeled as physical processes experienced from D5 (the present) rather than merely witnessed from D4 (the convergence).

The "explanatory gap" is read as the gap between dimensions. The framework argues that D5 experience cannot be exhausted using only D4 vocabulary — just as a sphere cannot be fully represented by a single flat chart.

4. WHAT WOULD FALSIFY THIS

  1. The dimensional architecture is wrong. If D4 (witness) and D5 (agent) are not distinct dimensions but merely different descriptions of the same state, the dimensional reading fails. Evidence: demonstration that witness systemic awareness and enacted agency are simultaneous rather than dimensionally sequential.

  2. The multiplicative structure is wrong. If the finite-node reading is better modeled additively (P_node = Φ + V) than multiplicatively (P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄)), or if well-specified cases show embodied contact does not depend on both coherence/recognition and viability/means, this model loses its explanatory role. This is a failure of the framework reading, not a public proof that experience itself is impossible.

  3. The dimensional gap is a true ontological break. If the apparent mind-body gap is a genuine discontinuity — not traversable through D4→D5 transit but a fundamental break in the manifold — the dimensional reading fails. Evidence: formal proof that no smooth mapping connects physical description (D4 witness) and phenomenal experience (D5 agent), even with dimensional transition.

  4. A non-dimensional account succeeds. If a competing framework dissolves the mind-body problem without dimensional layering — for example, successful reductive physicalism explaining qualia without D4/D5 distinction, or dualism solving causal interaction — the EFR dissolution is rendered unnecessary.

5. DIMENSIONAL SUMMARY

The Core Claim

Inside the framework, mind-body dualism is read as a dimensional projection error: - We experience ourselves as "mind" (witness at D4) distinct from "body" (viability substrate) - This is accurate at D4 — the witness (⊙) has ν = 0 (collapsed capability), so appears distinct from the body - At D5, this distinction is modeled as resolving — the coordinate image is φ = 1 and ν = 1, while the finite-node enactment is scored as P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄)

The Dissolution

Inside this model, the classical mind-body split is not reproduced at D5. The problem appears when D5 unity is forced into D4-only concepts.

The framework does not solve the mind-body problem as public proof; it tries to dissolve the conditions that create it by recognizing: 1. Mind is modeled as φ at D4 (witness systemic awareness) 2. Body is modeled as ν across the relevant dimensions (viability substrate) 3. Embodied contact is modeled as P_node = min(Φ̂₄, V₄) at D5; experience-as-lived is the interpretive reading of that enactment, not an independent proof.
